Thursday Parish Post – July 19, 2018

Dear Parish Family and Friends please read the following to catch up on what is happening this summer at St. Thomas.

PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE

I am finally working an updated Parish directory and will have copies out on the table in the Narthex starting Sunday, July 29.  I apologize for the delay.  So much has happened since I first started to do this project.  If you are newer at St. Thomas and would like a family picture to be included, please email it to the office by Thursday, July 26.  Some of you sent in pictures when I asked for them a few months ago and I thank you for doing so.  If you still want to change the picture that is in the current directory there is still one last chance.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL STILL NEEDS TEACHERS!

Summer Sunday School Teachers are needed in August and September.  The lessons and activities are easy and already set up for the volunteers  The format for this summer is the same as it has been in the past, by using the 4-S curriculum.  Following a brief worship service, the volunteer teachers will guide the children through an easy hands-on activity.  Each Sunday will be centered around a particular Bible lesson or Christian theme, including many old favorites.  There is a sample of the craft/activity, lesson plans, and any other needed directions, all gathered in a handy, prepacked bag.  We hope many of you will join us in this effort to expand our ministry with and for our children.   The sign-up sheet is on the table in the Narthex.  You may also call or email Sally Tolka at 304-694-0107 or sallytolka@gmail.com.

BLUE JEAN SUNDAY

In preparation for the fall and start of regular Sunday School, Beth Royall, our junior warden, has scheduled a second Blue Jean Sunday workday for Sunday, August 5. We realize there may be people out of town for a last hurrah, but this will work well to get the church spruced up for fall and some painting done in the Sunday School room.  If you are available and willing to help, please stay after the 10:30 a.m. service and help us.  Many hands make light work, and we want to help Sunday School prepare for the year ahead.

‘NOT-YOUR-AVERAGE’ YARD SALE

Please look for an announcement later this week for a sale on Saturday, the 11th of August, at the church. It will be organized by the Special Events Committee to benefit St. Thomas.  We know that we are going to have several art items and are hoping to “up-scale” it. We invite suggestions for names! Keep watching the post of more details to follow.

STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP IN THE NURSERY

Volunteers are needed to help in the nursery in August. Tyler Rigby will not be available to work in the nursery on August 12 and Bethany Kulchock will not be available on August 19. According to our diocesan policy, we must have two attendants in the nursery. If you can volunteer to assist our other nursery attendant, on either or both dates, please let Linda Yost know (thomasabecket.wv@gmail) as soon as possible.

ST THOMAS TO ASSIST IN SCOTTS RUN SETTLEMENT HOUSE BACK PACK FEEDING PROGRAM

Forty percent of Monongalia County children are at risk of being hungry over the weekend.  Scott’s Run Settlement House (SRSH) is helping to alleviate this problem with their Backpack Feeding Program.  Every weekend over 850 children in 12 Monongalia County schools take home a bag of nutritious food from the SRSH site.  The program can only work with plenty of volunteers.  St. Thomas à Becket will resume its schedule in this program―providing volunteers to fill bags the second and fifth Wednesday (if there is one) of each month―beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 12.  If you wish to volunteer or lean more about this program and how you can help, contact Aurie Acciavatti at auriebob@comcast.net.

Thank you and Blessings,

Linda Yost
