Forty percent of Monongalia County children are at risk of being hungry over the weekend.  Scott’s Run Settlement House (SRSH) is helping to alleviate this problem with their Backpack Feeding Program.  Every weekend over 850 children in 12 Monongalia County schools take home a bag of nutritious food from the SRSH program.  The program can only work with plenty of volunteers.  St. Thomas à Becket will resume its schedule in this program―providing volunteers to fill bags the second and fifth Wednesday (if there is one) of each month―the next date is Wednesday, October 10th.  If you wish to volunteer or lean more about this program and how you can help, contact Aurie Acciavatti at

Over the next few weeks the children of Sunday school will be doing some lessons to help them think about what pets need and how to take care of pets.   The outreach for the rest of August and September will be pet supplies; this includes food, treats as well as litter and cleaning supplies like Clorox wipes and paper towels.  We hope the congregation will help with these efforts. Donations can be put in the cradle in the Sunday School room.

Fall Sunday School has begun!   As we transition from summer Sunday School to fall, we will continue to need teachers and assistants.  Contact Ann Claycomb directly ( / 304-276-2012). Lessons will be provided as they have in the past.

The Youth Group has began meeting Sundays during service. The Youth Group is open to children 6th – 12th grade or those who completed confirmation classes.

The students who completed confirmation classes have been spending the summer participating in a variety of independent community service projects. Over several Sundays in October they’ll each present a 1-3 minute report to the congregation before October 21st.  We hope, once confirmed, that the Youth Group will participate in group community service projects together every couple of months.

We will continue hosting several work days for Pahl Hill.  Jeffrey Carver has removed several downed trees and has been cutting the wood so it can be dried.  He hopes to create several benches and other things needed for the outdoor worship space.  Most of the work needed is gathering and cutting wood to clear the area and create stacks of wood for future camp fires. Stay tuned for more information.

Come and share the Peterkin experience with friends and family over this relaxed and lightly structured weekend and enjoy the beautiful autumn of the Potomac Highlands.  This year’s Autumn at Peterkin event will last Friday-Monday due to coinciding with Columbus Day weekend.  You can choose 2 or 3 nights when registering.  We will also be offering an option to purchase a long-sleeved t-shirt with your registration.  You must register by September 20th to get a t-shirt; a limited number will be available for those who register late.  For more information, please contact the Peterkin office at 304-822-4519, or to register, please visit:
